What Frederick County homes actually need

Historic Downtown Frederick is its own world. The brick rowhomes and Victorians in and around the historic district are beautiful, but their windows are often original or long-outdated — and any visible change is subject to review (more on that below). Matching the existing look — two-over-two or six-over-six grid patterns, the right sightlines, historically appropriate colors — matters here, and it’s exactly the kind of custom detail our configurator is built for.

The older towns are prime for replacement. Thurmont, Emmitsburg, Brunswick and Middletown are full of early- and mid-century homes still carrying single-pane windows with aluminum storms, or first-generation replacements that are decades past their prime. The growth corridor is on its second round — or its first replacements. Urbana, Ijamsville, New Market and the newer parts of the city of Frederick boomed from the 1990s onward. A lot of that original builder-grade vinyl is now fogging between the panes — a failed seal, with the insulating gas gone. Often you don’t need a whole house, just the handful that failed, matched to the rest. There’s no minimum order — one window is a fine order.

Historic review and permits

Frederick County takes its history seriously. The City of Frederick’s Historic District is one of the largest in the state, and its Historic Preservation Commission reviews exterior changes — including windows — within the district; window material, grid pattern and profile can all come into play. Towns like Middletown, Brunswick and New Market have their own historic areas as well. Outside the districts, most like-for-like window replacement is straightforward. Permitting is handled by the City of Frederick or the smaller municipalities within their limits, and by Frederick County elsewhere — when we install, we take care of the permitting that applies to your job.
