What DC homes actually need
Rowhouses are the story here. Capitol Hill, Shaw, Logan Circle, Bloomingdale, Petworth, Columbia Heights, Eckington and Brookland are full of late-1800s and early-1900s brick rowhomes, many still on original or long-outdated windows. Getting the look right — two-over-two or one-over-one sightlines, the correct proportions, historically sympathetic colors — matters as much as the energy savings, and that’s exactly the kind of custom detail our configurator is built for.
Detached-home neighborhoods have different needs. Upper Northwest — Chevy Chase DC, Tenleytown, AU Park, Cleveland Park, the Palisades — and pockets east of the river have detached and semi-detached homes where whole-house replacements and larger picture and casement windows are common. If your 1990s or 2000s windows are fogging between the panes, that’s a failed seal with the insulating gas gone; often you only need the ones that failed, matched to the rest. Historic districts: read this first
DC has one of the largest concentrations of historic districts in the country, and window replacement inside them is genuinely regulated. Most are reviewed by the Historic Preservation Review Board and the Historic Preservation Office; Georgetown is reviewed separately by the Old Georgetown Board. On street-facing facades in a historic district, the rules can require specific materials, profiles and sightlines — and in some districts vinyl replacement windows are not approved for the primary elevation. Rear and non-visible windows usually have far more latitude.
We’ll be straight with you rather than sell you something that gets red-tagged: if your home is in a historic district, check with the Historic Preservation Office (or the Old Georgetown Board in Georgetown) about what’s allowed before you order, and we’ll help match a product to those requirements where we can. Outside the historic districts, and for rear elevations, standard replacement is straightforward. Permitting in the District runs through the Department of Buildings; when we install, we handle the permitting that applies to your job.
